Rainbow Remembrance Day Guest Post
Deb Barnes from Zee & Zoey’s Cat Chronicles
This is the Cat Blogosphere, but in the blogging world, the love of a pet transcends all species and we’re an extremely close group, often knowing the name of someone’s pet(s), more so than their human counterpart. Through blogging and social media we collectively celebrate the love we have for our pets and equally so, when one of us loses a pet, we also mourn the loss together, often feeling the pain as if it were one of our own.
Saying goodbye is never easy and when I had to make the difficult decision on August 28, 2013 to help my beloved Ragdoll cat, Mr. Jazz, cross the Rainbow Bridge, it was especially agonizing. Jazz had been with me for 15 years and when I shared the story of his passing and the feelings of grief, guilt, and pain I was experiencing on my blog, Zee & Zoey’s Cat Chronicles, the reaction from readers was astounding.
So many people opened up with comments and private messages that they appreciated me sharing my story, as they too had similar feelings after the loss of a pet but did not know how to express them. That’s why I decided to write the book Purr Prints of the Heart – A Cat’s Tale of Life, Death, and Beyond as a meow memoir in the voice of Mr. Jazz. I wanted to help others who had lost a pet and were having difficulty with letting go, and not only did it help, it became a stepping stone to much more, as I realized people needed (and wanted) additional means to share their feelings.
It came to me one day – something nearly everyone who has loved and lost a pet could relate to – the concept of Rainbow Bridge. In tribute to Mr. Jazz who taught me invaluable lessons about love and letting go, in 2015 I came up with Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day – a worldwide, annual event to take place every August 28th in which people would have a comforting environment to share pictures, poems, blog posts, videos, and more about their pet(s) in loving memory.
There are no rules for the day – you can participate quietly from afar or you can join the blog hop I host or the event page on Facebook. The only request I have is that you be kind to yourself – your pet knew how much you loved him or her and they hold no grudges they had to move on. Rejoice in the time you shared, for however long or short their time on this earth was and take the day to celebrate that love.
Thank you to all who participate and heartfelt condolences to those who have had to say goodbye to a beloved pet. For those of you that have opened your hearts and homes to love a pet again, please be sure to give them extra love and hugs today, as each moment we are blessed to have with them is so very precious.
